All he thought about was going home. The previous November, he had traveled for a long time in the wagon to get to the farm. The city was left far behind. Could he walk that far? And what if he headed in the wrong direction? At the Bauermans he had food and a bed and, well … friends. Each day he said to himself he would find a way tomorrow. And so the weeks and months passed.

“I’ll get out of here someday,” he told Peter. “I’m only here for a short while.”

Peter shook his head sadly. “Yes, you keep saying that, Karl, but it’s not so easy to go home.”

“And Herr Solberg makes me want to leave even sooner. He doesn’t like me—picks on me all the time.”

Peter shrugged. “He likes boys who behave.”

“I’ll get even with him one day.”
